Today, students in the summer literacy program headed to the creek at Brevard College for some hands-on cleanup and learning!
Campers explored the creek to study the invertebrates that live there and what they tell us about water quality. The highlight of the day: catching a mayfly, which only lives in clean water, a great sign that the creek at Brevard College is healthy! Students also caught fish, crawdads, and other creek creatures along the way. So much fun!
The summer literacy program is hosted by Brevard First United Methodist Church, with the help of several Transylvania County Schools educators. The program is led by site director Baylee Bicio, a teacher at Pisgah Forest Elementary School, and staffed by six TCS employees from three of the district's four elementary schools, serving 30 K-2 campers from all four elementary schools this summer.
Over the past two years, students in the program have shown an average of four months of reading growth during their five weeks in the program, based on MAP Growth data!
Mornings include five rotations of reading intervention groups, and afternoons feature enrichment activities built around a weekly theme tied to read-aloud texts.

Big day for our Pre-K friends! 🚌💛
Today they rode the bus for the very first time, and there were lots of smiles and excitement. We even had a special guest, Rocky, ride along with them! We are so proud of our youngest learners!

A big thank you to Mountain Roots for an awesome outdoor learning experience for our 5th graders last week! Students had a great time exploring aquatic life cycles through hands-on activities and learning in nature.
